Do you choose to go with the slow feeding technique?

Check out the seven benefits you will gain through slow feeding with the help of horse feeder as follows:

1.  Decreased secretion of cortisol

There is an increase in cortisol with the stress that is associated with the meals. Insulin rises with the rise in cortisol levels leading to the storage of fat. It is the reason why a few of the horses seem to be able to live on air, as it can cause or even worsen obesity.

A minimum of 1.5% to 2% of their body weight per day in grass hay that is low in non-structural carbohydrates is what an overweight horse should receive. The diet is balanced and routine exercises are implemented. They can typically eat more and maintain or lose weight if appropriate slow-fed free-choice forage or horse feeders are available.

2. Reduced risk of ulcers

Twenty-four hours a day in preparation for constant uptake, the equine stomach produces acid and can be emptied as little as 20 minutes max. To buffer the gastric acid, chewing activates saliva, which is an alkaline substance.

The horse will also generate five gallons of saliva each day, eventually recycling much of the water content through re-absorption before the excretion under natural conditions with free-choice forage or the horse feeder.

There will also be less amount of splashing of acids with the help of fiber that is present in the stomach. It can receive protection by also the production of mucus as it can lower part of the stomach. The upper or the non-glandular part is more susceptible to damages by the acids as it has no protection from the horse feeders. The upper portion is similar to the skin as it has squamous epithelium. It can create a mat of sorts that is especially important during any physical activity or exercise, causing the splashing of acids having fiber in the stomach.

3.  Increased digestion

It needs time and movement with the fermentation and optimal digestion of the horse feeder. It can gut motility as stimulated by mobility. Both will be encouraged with the provision for forage free-choice in multiple locations. It can help effectively keep the hindgut both weighted and motile, preventing conditions that contribute to the colic with the promotion of consistent fermentation.

When it comes to the cecum in a horse, it has an exit and entrance to the top. The cecum contracts to push the contents out the top as the digested material has to defy the gravity in order to exit. Forage or horse feeders should flow through the digestive system at all times to accomplish this function.

The particle size will not be reduced sufficiently or have a high enough saliva-to-forage ratio if your horse consumes hay or horse feeders too quickly. In terms of digestion, saliva plays a very crucial role. To impact colic, larger amounts of dry matter lack sufficient saliva.

The hindgut is populated with billions of naturally occurring beneficial bacteria, and protozoa are the main site for fiber digestion. However, to the harmful bacteria, the hindgut is also home to it. Without the hay or grass intake, the healthy balance between beneficial and harmful bacteria can be easily disrupted with periods of time. To make sure healthy gut function and reduce the incidences of hindgut acidosis and laminitis, maintaining a consistent population of beneficial bacteria is important.

4.  Minimized or alleviated the boredom

The equines can benefit psychologically when they are allowed to slow feed. An occupied horse is less likely to develop vices stemming from boredom or discomfort is what it is along with:

  • Chewing on inanimate objects
  • Cribbing
  • Weaving/Pacing
  • Stall kicking
  • Pawing
  • Eating manure

5.  Natural wear of teeth

The teeth wear off more naturally when eating at ground level with an increased chew time. The mandible or the jaw bone can come down and forward in the atlantoaxial and temporomandibular joints through the natural grazing position. It is the reason why horse feeder is the more preferred option here. The mandible can move side to side, forward and back, move up and down without any hindrance, thereby reducing the particle size and facilitating optimum mastication.

6.  Little to no wasted hay

The horses are prevented from trampling hay and containing it in windy conditions through the slow horse feeders.  Even in windy conditions, horses naturally prefer to eat outside as they are prey animals depending on sight and sound to detect their predators.

It can create psychological tension if either of these defenses is impaired. Their peripheral vision is not impaired, and they feel safer and secure when eating from ground level in an unobstructed area.

7.  Weight management

Each mouthful of hay is a more concentrated source of calories as it is grass with water reduced. Eight to seven times more calories than live grass per pound are contained in the hay. As opposed to sun-cured hay at 5 to 10%, the grass is 70 to 80% more water.

Slow feeding through horse feeder will help to regular the spikes in insulin, secretion of cortisol, and metabolism if your horse is overweight. It can also help to increase digestion and assimilation of nutrients and calories for the underweight equines.
